Music Promoters

The main job of a promoter is publicizing concerts. Music promoters are the people who "put on the show" before the band actually performs. They work with the venues to get what is needed for the stage or performance area. Once this is done, a producer has the job of making sure that the word about the show is circulated so it gets publicity.

A music producer also takes care of the band. The producer arranges everything that is needed for a performance. He or she makes sure that the band has housing, such as hotel rooms, and that there will be sound and audio and any other arrangement that is needed.

So, now that the jobs of a music promoter have been covered, what should a good promoter do?

It is important for a music promoter to talk with the bands and with the venues. The promoter should be in charge of arranging the dates and times of performances.

The promoter needs to negotiate a deal with bands or agents for the show. What are the fees? What accommodations are needed and which accommodations do the bands or agents handle?

The music promoter must then book a venue for the agreed upon date. After that is done, the promoter must send out promotions to the local press and radio. He or she must also put up posters and use e-mail lists of the local press and radio stations in order to get the information out about the concert.

The music promoter must also make sure that all equipment for the band. The producer is also in charge of arranging a support band, more commonly known as an opening band. The support band is usually offered a small amount of money if the concert is a big enough money maker and it is all up to the music producer to determine these details and work out the deals.

When working as a music promoter, there are many different salaries. These depend on the deals made and the popularity of the bands. When people work as music promoters for indie bands, they can find it quite hard to make money. Often the job of promoter is done on the side of a regular day job.

If wondering if music promoters need a contract, a contract is always a must when working with large amounts of money. Sometimes a contract may be skipped if working with an indie band that knows they will not make much money.

If being a music promoter sounds interesting, there are two main ways to get started. The first way is to go to local venues and offer services as a promoter. Many of these venues will have people who already work in the music industry as promoters. Another case may be that they do not have any money to hire a music promoter and work will have to be done for free.

The other way to get started is to start working with local bands. Introduce yourself to the local bands and let them know that you would like work as a music promoter for the band. If they do not do this themselves or already have a promoter, they may be glad to have help. It is common that no money may be made at first.

It is important to get skills working as a music promoter before actually trying to get a job being one.
