Record deal
A record deal, which is more formally known as a recording contract, is a legal agreement between a record label and a recording artist. Recording artists who have signed a record deal are often only legally allowed to record for the one record label exclusively. There are many parts to a deal. Here is a quick guide to deals. The term is how long the deal lasts. The term is important because it keeps record labels from bonding an artist to them for a really long time. The minimum commitment is the least that the label has to do in order to keep an artist please with the deal. If the record label does not comply with the minimum commitment, then the artists can claim that the legalities were not followed and switch record labels. Exclusivity means that the artists can only record for the one record label. If the artist does record on another label or with another band, the record label must be given credit and usually some type of monetary compensation as well. The record label is usually granted rights and copyright of the music and images of the band. There are many more issues to a deal such as usage rights and video, but the important part of knowing about a deal now that the few basics have been given is learning how to get a deal. The first step in getting a deal is having a demo. Record the demo in a place where the quality of the music will be high. If possible, get a professional to record the music. When looking for a place to send the demo to in a bid to securing a deal, find the name of a person rather than the copany. Do not just send the demo to the company. This may result in the demo being sent to the wrong person. If this happens, they will not know what to do with the demo and the process of trying to get a deal will be hindered.Make sure that your demo has the best songs first. Even if the songs are not the favorite, the best quality songs should be first. A record label is not going to take an artist seriously if poor quality music is the first thing that is heard. Poor quality music will easily halt getting a deal. Also, be persistent when trying to get a record deal. Do not just sit and wait for the person to call. Call that person and ask how he or she liked the music. Yet, when doing this, also be professional. When trying to get a deal, it is important to be seen as mature and professional. When trying to get a deal, it is good to get a small deal in your local area first. Often these deals can be worked out in times of weeks or months, allowing the music to be heard. If the music grows, these small record labels tend to let artists go ahead and keep trying to get deals with bigger label companies. Remember, it is not the end of the world if a deal is not obtained. There are always other options to continue with the music. Also, record deals can be tried for again as well. Just make sure to space out the time that demos are sent to the same person and make sure that the demos are different.
