Uk Garage
UK Garage is also known as UKG, or just garage within the UK. It actually refers to a couple of different types of modern electronic dance music. The actual UK garage comes from the evolution of UK house music in the 1990s. The name of the type of music was coined by the Paradise Garage DJs, when they applied it to a new form of music that was also called speed garage. In the late nineties, the term Garage was what was most accepted by the music scene in general. The Garage sound developed during a time in which jungle beats and techno music were very popular. During jungle or techno parties, garage music was often played in second rooms. DJs in the US were speeding up tracks of US music in order to make them more acceptable to be played in the UK, as jungle and techno songs in the UK were usually much faster than those in the US. These tempo-altered songs became very popular, and the media began to refer to them as "speed garage". The versions of these songs were usually played without lyrics, as that way they would sound fine if sped up. Without the lyrics, this left room for MCs, who started to rhyme during the songs in order to fill in the empty spaces. This music became the predecessor to the 2-step music that is currently created as garage music in the UK. The style now is frequently combined with other types of music, such as rap, hip hop, and R&B. Most of the time, it is filed under the term "urban music". There are several artists that have claimed their own rights in the UK Garage scene. These include Sillo, The Streets, The Artful Dodger, Shanks & Bigfoot, Sunship, DJ Luck and MC Neat, Oxide and Neutrino. Garage music in the UK is similar, but very different in some locations. For instance, the East London Garage music is much more raw than the garage music played elsewhere. In East London, there is a greater emphasis placed on electronic beats and other rhythms. UK Garage is usually found with several distinct sounds. First of all, there is a very heavy bass kick and snare drum part that is popular in Garage music. Secondly, the form is usually a 2-step, meaning that it is fast and with only two beats in each measure. Thirdly, there are other drum sounds that are very popular, which stems back to the jungle and techno beats. The bass line in the songs is very important because it is often what stands out in the clubs. Also, sometimes the bass lines are overdubbed with organ sounds. The tracks are also done with a heavy shuffle, so that they are given a swing feeling. There is usually a tune to the 2-step tracks, and there is also usually an MC that gives words in a rhyming patter during the songs. These are the components of the modern Garage music sound.
